Sustainable Sunday – October 9th, 2016

Join Sustainable Lafayette for its third annual fundraiser, Sustainable Sunday! On Sunday, October 9th, we’ll explore “The Broader Impact of Local Action.” We are featuring a variety of speakers, including Ben Simon, CEO of Imperfect Produce, and Alexandra McGee, Community Power Organizer of MCE.

Enjoy sustainably-produced appetizers, live music, and a silent auction featuring local Bay Area businesses.The proceeds of the auction will directly benefit our newest venture, the Lafayette Open Space Project, which seeks to preserve and protect Lafayette’s undeveloped resources. They will also support our other programs, including the Earth Day Festival, the Summer Environmental Film series, Green Schools, and more.

Edie Irons, Communications Director of TransFormCA

As Communications Director, Edie oversees TransForm’s print and online communications, media relations, branding, and messaging. She comes to TransForm with more than 12 years of experience in communications, outreach, policy advocacy, and political organizing.

Ben Simon, CEO of Imperfect Produce

Ben Simon was a student at the University of Maryland, about four years ago, when his fight against food waste officially began. Ben remembers that he and his friends knew that there was a huge hunger problem and says that he and his “friends were in the dining hall one day and saw good food going to waste…, so we basically developed an awesome program called Food Recovery Network.” Food Recovery Network, FNR for short, was founded in 2011 and quickly became the largest student movement against hunger with chapters at over 150 colleges in 39 states. To date, FNR has rescued over 1,000,000 pounds of food and implores people to reevaluate the way they view and handle excess food.

Alexandra McGee, Community Power Organizer of MCE

Before joining MCE in September of 2015, Alexandra completed her Masters at UC Berkeley researching and comparing implementation approaches to successful community engagement in decentralized, small-scale, renewable energy projects for rural electrification in Nicaragua.
