For over 40 years, Earth Day has inspired and mobilized individuals and organizations worldwide to demonstrated their commitment to environment protection and sustainability. This year the Earth Day Network is trying to rally 1 billion acts of green. In Lafayette we will be celebrating our efforts to protect our environment with a community picnic right in the middle of town.

Picnic on the Green

Plaza Way, 11:30 – 1:30

A community picnic right in the center of town! Bring your own or buy lunch at the square prepared with food from local farmers (Earth Day Picnic Menu) for only $5. Enjoy live music with two great bands: Pat Nevins & Amy Gabel (11:30-12:30) and Delta Dogs (1pm – 2:30pm) Also, learn about all the environmental groups that are helping to make Lafayette more earth-friendly. Last year’s picnic was a huge success and we’re excited to bring back the same great event this year.

History of Earth Day

April 22nd marks the anniversary of what many consider the birth of the modern environmental movement. After witnessing a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment in massive coast-to-coast rallies. The groundswell on that first Earth Day in 1970, was supported across the country by all political and income groups, and led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts. Today, Earth Day is celebrated worldwide by hundreds of millions of people in over 184 countries and the priorities have shifted to clean energy and addressing global warming.
